FAQs
Do I need any experience to start flight training?
1
Nope—most students start with zero experience. Your first lesson is designed to introduce you to the basics and get you comfortable in the air.
How old do I have to be to learn to fly?
2
You can start training at any age, but you must be at least 16 to gain a student pilot certificate, and 17 to earn your private pilot certificate, see 14 CFR §61.83 for eligibility requirements.
How much does it cost to get a pilot license?
3
Costs vary, but most students spend between $15,000–$18,000 depending on how often they fly and how quickly they progress.
Do I have to pay everything upfront?
4
No—training is pay-as-you-go, so you can spread the cost over time.
How long does it take to get a license?
5
Most students finish in 3–6 months if flying consistently, but it can be faster or slower depending on your schedule.
Where do the lessons take place?
6
Lessons are conducted out of KSPK (Spanish Fork) and KSVR (West Jordan) rental aircraft.
2–3 times per week is ideal for steady progress and keeping skills sharp.
7
How often should I fly?
What happens if there’s bad weather?
8
Safety comes first—flights may be rescheduled, or you can use that time for ground instruction or self-study always!
Yes, but it’s simple. You’ll need 3rd Class Medical certificate issued by an FAA-authorized medical examiner (AME). See https://designee.faa.gov/designeeLocator to find one in your area.
9
Do I need a medical exam?
Can I train around my work schedule?
10
Yes—flexible scheduling is available, including evenings and weekends. Plenty of students train while maintaining a full-time job.
What should I bring to my first lesson?
11
Considered for your introductory flight, just bring a valid ID, comfortable clothes, your current weight, and a willingness to learn!
It’s a challenge—but with the right instructor, most people are surprised how quickly they pick it up.
12
Is flying hard to learn?
Why train with a private instructor instead of a big flight school?
13
Can I take a lesson just for fun (not a full license)?
14
Training with me is more affordable and the lessons are completely customized to your needs. Most schools act as feeders, and don’t watch out for your bottom line like I will. Big schools will often charge $75-$100/hour for instruction alone, but the instructor only ever sees around quarter of that.
Yes! Introduction/Discovery flights are perfect for bucket lists, gifts, or just trying something new.
